CASE STUDY

Case Studies: Documentary and Independent Film Post-Production Success Stories

Different Projects. Different Challenges. Proven Results.

By Design: The Joe Caroff Story

Award-Winning Documentary Post-Production for Independent Filmmakers

By Design: The Joe Caroff Story
Mark and Paul on the red carpet

The Challenge

By Design: The Joe Caroff Story began as a passion project for filmmaker Mark Cerulli and Paul C. Rosen, who shared a deep appreciation for the remarkable legacy of graphic designer Joe Caroff and his impact on film history.

Without dedicated funding, the project moved forward whenever time and resources allowed. Over the course of seven years, Mark, Paul, and the broader Nitrous team remained committed to bringing the story to completion while balancing the realities of independent filmmaking and client work.

While most productions that work with Nitrous move through post-production in a matter of months, By Design followed a unique path due to its self-funded nature and long-term development cycle.

Nitrous Contribution

Throughout the life of the project, the Nitrous team provided the infrastructure, talent, and post-production expertise necessary to carry the film from concept to delivery.

  • Editorial workflow planning
  • Media management and organization
  • Project coordination
  • Professional color grading in DaVinci Resolve
  • Audio mastering in Pro Tools
  • Online finishing, mastering, and final delivery
  • Collaborative editorial workflows in Avid Media Composer, supported by Nitrous' shared storage and networked infrastructure, enabling editors, assistant editors, and post-production personnel to work efficiently across the same project and media environment

As the film entered its final stages, Nitrous managed the complete finishing process, ensuring the project was fully prepared for festival exhibition, broadcast presentation, and distribution opportunities.

Color grading was performed by Paul C. Rosen, with support from the broader Nitrous post-production team throughout the project's lifecycle.

The Result

The completed film achieved both festival recognition and commercial distribution:

  • Winner, Beverly Hills Film Festival – Best Documentary Short
  • Finalist, New York Festivals
  • Licensed by Turner Classic Movies (TCM)
  • Streaming on HBO Max

The project demonstrates how experienced post-production talent, collaborative workflows, and professional finishing can help independent films reach audiences well beyond their original scope.
